Hong Kong school application season: visits, deadlines, and what an open day is not
A parent-level map of kindergarten, primary, and secondary visiting season in Hong Kong — without pretending to be admissions advice. How to use education-level filters and keep school websites as the source of truth.

Hong Kong school places follow formal systems (including kindergarten schemes, Primary One Admission, and secondary allocation) that change in the detail every cycle. What the listings are good for: seeing that September and October fill with kindergarten open days and primary information talks for the next academic year, that international schools often run weekday open houses as well as Saturdays, and that the same network may repeat a theme across campuses a week apart.
Kindergarten: you are shopping a year of your life, not a logo
Many K1 processes start about a year before the child attends. Autumn open days are therefore not “extra”; they are the window. Separate the marketing carnival from the admissions talk. A mid-autumn evening in the estate courtyard tells you how the school occupies shared space. It does not tell you the application deadline.
Filter SoFunNear to nursery / kindergarten. Then filter the neighbourhood you can reach at 8am with a toddler, not the neighbourhood you wish you lived in. If two campuses of the same brand are on the list, compare pickup and napping space, not the English name on the hoarding.
Primary: discretionary, POA, DSS, and international are different queues
Aided primary schools and the POA system are not the same queue as DSS or international open houses. A “P1 admission talk” in September may be for discretionary places; a carnival in the same month may be community outreach with no form attached. Read the event body for words like 自行分配學位, 統一派位, OpenApply, or “registration now closed”.
Do not treat an open day as an interview unless the school says the visit is part of assessment. Dress so you can walk stairs. Bring the child if the format is 親子; leave them with a grandparent if it is a 90-minute hall talk. Use the primary education filter so secondary information days drop out of the list.
Secondary and through-train noise
Secondary information days cluster later and are easier to over-pack because teenagers can sit through two talks. Still cluster by region. A “through-train” claim at a primary open day is a question (“which secondary, what proportion of the cohort, what happens if the child does not go”) not a reason to skip visiting elsewhere.
International and private schools often require pre-registration and close forms early. If SoFunNear still shows the date, check the organiser link — we do not automatically hide a page when a third-party form closes.
Keep a two-column list
Column one: visits you will actually attend, with MTR plan and backup if it rains. Column two: application actions (form, fee, reference, deadline) copied from the school site. Mixing those columns is how a family attends five carnivals and misses one form.
Bookmark the event on SoFunNear for the visit logistics (address, map, session time). Put the deadline in your own calendar from the school PDF. If a listing looks thin or copied from a poster, it may still be accurate — posters are how most estate kindergartens announce. Verify, then go or delete.
