Free family events in Hong Kong: what “$0” actually means on the listing
School open days, mall booths, exhibitions, and community programmes are often free to enter — but not free in time or extras. How to filter SoFunNear for no-fee events without wasting Saturday.
Free on SoFunNear is an organiser-reported fee field
When an event shows HK$0 or “Free”, it means the organiser told us there is no admission charge for the listed session. It does not mean you will spend nothing — craft kits, photos, food, and donation boxes appear at many school carnivals. Tutorial centres may list a free trial while the term invoice waits in the fine print.
Use the fee filter as a first cut, then read the description for 材料費, 報名費, or “first session free”. If the fee field is empty, the organiser did not publish a price — assume “ask on site” rather than free.
Categories where free is common
School and kindergarten open days, information talks, and many Mid-Autumn carnivals are free to attend. Government and NGO exhibitions often are. Mall atrium performances are usually free to watch; paid workshops happen beside them.
Concerts, ticketed exhibitions, and sports leagues rarely list as zero. Hobby-class trials may show $0 for one session while the series is paid. Filter category + fee together: “education” + free for open days; “exhibition” + free for museums with free admission days.

The real cost is travel and time
A free event in Tuen Mun is not free if you live in Chai Wan and only go for a 20-minute booth. Pair free listings with the neighbourhood filter you already use for paid classes. Two free events in the same mall beat one free event plus one “because we are already out” paid workshop.
Near me is useful for free spontaneity: you are in a mall, filter free + happening now, and pick something starting within the hour. It is less useful for planning school open-day season — use date range instead.
Souvenirs, gifts, and queues

Mention materials, photos, or donation expectations in the description so families do not report the listing as misleading.
